What is an organic honey characterized by?
Just like all other organic products, the reference code is CE 2092/91. Here are some details about the production of this particular kind of honey;
• During the phases of production, the use of European races of honeybees and local ecotypes is preferred.
• Beehive position: It must either guarantee sufficient natural sources of nectar, honeydew and pollen as well as access to water for bees or it must be close (3 km) to organic cultivations and/or to wild flora and at a sufficient distance from any possible pollutant, such as urban centers, industrial areas, waste disposals, incinerators, etc.
• At the end of the production period, it is important to leave sufficient honey and pollen supplies in the beehive so that it can survive during the winter.
• The artificial feeding of colonies is authorized only when the survival of the beehive is in danger because of extreme weather conditions. Artificial feeding must be that of organic honey, preferably the same organic variety.
• The prophylaxis (treatment and prevention) is based on the following principles:
• Selection of existing resistant races
• Use of procedures that favor a high resistance to illnesses and the prevention of infections, such as periodic renewal of queen bees, systematic inspection of the beehives to identify abnormal health problems, control of the males in the beehive, periodic disinfecting of materials and equipment, destruction of contaminated material, periodic renewal of wax and build-up of honey and pollen in the beehives
•For treating bees, the following substances are permitted: formic acid, lactic acid, acetic acid, oxalic acid, menthol, thymol, eucalyptol or camphor.
• The use of foreign synthetic repellent substances during the honey separation process is forbidden.
• The hives must be built with natural materials that will not contaminate either the environment or the beekeeping products.
